Special delivery

Endeavour was the last space shuttle to join NASA's fleet: It was built to replace the shuttle Challenger, which was lost in an explosion shortly after launch in 1986. First liftoff

Endeavour lifts off from Launch Pad 39B at NASA's Kennedy Space Center on May 7, 1992, beginning its first mission. The STS-49 mission's primary task was the repair of the Intelsat VI telecommunications satellite. Endeavour was the only shuttle to make its maiden flight from Pad 39B.

Grab that satellite!

Endeavour astronauts Richard Hieb, Thomas Akers and Pierre Thuot hold onto the 4.5-ton Intelsat VI satellite after making a six-handed "capture" on May 13, 1992. The satellite failed to rise above low Earth orbit when it was launched in 1990. During Endeavour's maiden mission, astronauts retrieved the satellite, attached it to a new upper-stage booster and relaunched it to its intended geosynchronous orbit. This mission marked the first time that three people from the same spacecraft walked in space at the same time.

Fixing Hubble

Erroneous endeavor

ASTRONOMOS AMADORES DESCOBREM PLANETA EM SISTEMA COM QUATRO SOIS

. Grupo usou dados do observatorio Kepler para encontrar
objeto pouco maior que Netuno. Voluntarios do projeto de ciencia
participativa Planet Hunters descobriram um novo planeta em um sistema
que nao tem apenas uma estrela como o da Terra, mas um total de quatro.
Com base em dados publicos do observatorio espacial Kepler, da Nasa, os
astronomos amadores ajudaram uma equipe de pesquisadores liderada por
cientistas da Universidade de Yale a verificar que o planeta, um gigante
gasoso pouco maior que Netuno batizado PH1, orbita o sistema estelar
binario KIC 4862625 a cada 137 dias. A 144 bilhoes de quilometros do KIC
4862625 (cerca de mil vezes a distancia da Terra ao Sol), no entanto,
outra dupla de estrelas orbita o sistema, dando ao PH1 seus quatro sois.
"Esta descoberta e' um marco para a equipe do Planet Hunters, seu
primeiro achado de um planeta extrassolar com dados do Kepler, e tambem
tem um fator excitante por ser em um planeta com quatro estrelas",
comentou Natalie Batalha, cientista da missao Kepler no Centro de
Pesquisas Ames, da Nasa. "Mas mais importante, celebro esta descoberta
como fruto exemplar da cooperacao humana, cooperacao entre cientistas e
cidadaos que doam seu tempo por amor 'as estrelas, ao conhecimento e 'a
exploracao." A cerca de cinco mil anos-luz de distancia do Sistema
Solar, o PH1 nao e' o primeiro planeta extrassolar confirmado que orbita
um sistema binario, mas e' o unico caso conhecido em que as estrelas do
centro do sistema tambem estao ligadas gravitacionalmente a outra dupla
estelar. Sua descoberta tambem desafia as teorias sobre formacao
planetaria, ja' que um sistema com quatro estrelas deve ser ainda mais
instavel que um binario simples para permitir a existencia de um objeto
planetario. "E' fascinante tentar imaginar como seria visitar um planeta
com quatro sois no ceu, mas este novo mundo confunde os astronomos: nao
esta' claro como ele se formou em um ambiente tao agitado", admitiu
Chris Lintott, cientista da Universidade Oxford, no Reino Unido, a

Una supernova luminossima è stata scoperta dall'Osservatorio astronomico provinciale di Montarrenti (Siena), gestito dall'Unione astrofili senesi e e parte dell'Italian Supernovae Search Project (Issp).

La stella è stata scoperta in piena fase esplosiva, otto giorni prima del suo massimo di luminosità, da Simone Leonini, Giacomo Guerrini, Paolo Rosi e Luz Marina Tinjaca Ramirez.

La scoperta, subito segnalata a livello internazionale, è stata confermata dalla osservazioni condotte dal gruppo di astronomi franco-americani del Nearby Supernovae Factory , grazie al telescopio di oltre 2,2 metri di diametro posto alla sommità del Mauna Kea, nelle Isole Hawaii. L'evento è stato classificato di tipo Ia, individuato quasi all'apice del suo splendore.

''Il bagliore della potente esplosione cosmica che ha sprigionato una quantità di energia pari a quella che il Sole può produrre in tutta la sua esistenza - spiegano gli autori della scoperta - proviene dalla galassia a spirale chiamata NGC927 ed è stato osservato per la prima volta al mondo dal borgo medievale alle porte di Siena''. L'evento è stato generato dall'eslosione di una stella di piccola massa appartenente ad un sistema binario che ha 'risucchiato' materia dalla stella compagna, alla distanza di circa 360 milioni di anni luce dalla Terra.
